It all started with a small act of kindness

The background of PTSTAX® is simple. While working as an employee of a small consumer finance store in 1987, Tony Farrell, PTSTAX's CEO & Founder, was approached by a longtime customer who asked him to prepare his taxes. Tony agreed, and the process took only 10 minutes to complete a basic 1040 form. As this was such a simple process, Tony did not feel compelled to charge the man anything. The man insisted and placed a ten-dollar bill on his desk, and walked away. The next day, the man's sister came to Tony asking for the ten-dollar tax preparation her brother had received the previous day. Tony not only processed her taxes but also loaned her money until her refund came in, as she could not make ends meet until her tax money arrived; thus, he performed his first refund anticipation loan without even knowing it. When the woman's refund came in weeks later, she paid Tony back. Tony ended up preparing 30 returns that year on a referral basis only. For the next few years, he continued growing his tax preparation service through customers, referrals, family, and friends.

In 1991, e-filing was created by the IRS, bringing Tony much success as tax refunds were being processed more quickly than the old paper returns he had been completing. At this point, Tony decided to step out and run his own consumer finance office and tax location. By 1995, Tony had grown his business to four locations- handling all finance operations as well as tax support. Simultaneously, the Internet was starting to boom, and so were his offices- each preparing 700-800 individual tax returns per location. He was so successful that his friends in the consumer finance industry asked for help growing their businesses with tax preparation. By 1998, Tony partnered with others to open 174 offices through his own company name, PTS Inc., later renamed PTSTAX.
